“Flying Birds”

Birds are flying above

In a flying formation

Like the military planes that I once saw

Forming a fighting pattern

In which direction are they flying?

Birds smoothly gliding through the air

Like F-16’s

Breaking through the wind with ease

They look like they are headed north

Surely across the border

That divides the North from the South

Heavily guarded from both sides

Birds are flying there

Thank God they are not war planes

These birds will not drop anything damaging

Except their miniscule bodily waste

The case would be different

Were these battle planes

They would be dropping bombs of mass destruction

Many people would die

Birds are flying fast

And soon they will disappear from my view

They will probably reach the North before sundown

And people there will see

Those in the North might say

Wow, look at these birds

Flying in from the South

Good that they are not war planes

Some unfortunate soul might be hit by bird droppings

But better that than a bomb

Koreans in the South

Don’t want fighter planes from the North either

Bombs kill

Many people

Bird droppings

Might ruin a suit, but that’s it

Koreans in the South

Might see birds flying in from the North tomorrow

And thank God that

They are not fighting machines

Who wants a war?

Koreans in the South

Koreans in the North

Want to see birds rather than fighter planes ready for action
